History of The Palms at Indian Head
The Palms at Indian Head sits on the grounds of the former Old Hoberg Resort, Borrego Springs’ first major lodging facility built in 1947. This 20-acre property quickly became a favorite retreat for Hollywood stars in the 1950s. Icons like Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and Frank Morgan once strolled these grounds, enjoying the solitude and luxury the desert provided. The original resort featured a landing strip, an Olympic-sized pool, a cocktail lounge, a restaurant, and bungalow retreats, offering guests a complete desert escape.
However, in 1958, the original lodge was tragically lost to a fire, illuminating the valley on that fateful night. Later that year, the resort was rebuilt in a mid-century modern style, reopening as The Borrego Palms Resort. Over the years, the property saw a series of unique transformations, serving as a nudist retreat, a school for children with disabilities, and even a detention center before falling into disrepair.
In 1993, the current owners undertook a massive restoration effort, breathing life back into the Palms at Indian Head. While much of the original property was lost, the memories linger, and today’s guests enjoy a revitalized version of this historic site.
